April 2 (Reuters) - The operator of Japan's quake-stricken nuclear plant said on Saturday it had found radioactive water leaking into the sea from a cracked concrete pit at its No.2 reactor in Fukushima.
Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) officials said it was possible that the crack may be the source of recent radiation contamination in the sea off the northeast coast.
The radiation in the pit measured 1,000 millisieverts per hour. It was not clear whether the water had come from the reactor itself nor how much has been leaking from the pit into the sea.
Hidehiko Nishiyama, deputy director-general of the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, told a separate news conference that TEPCO was planning to pour concrete into the pit to seal the crack.
"With radiation levels rising in the seawater near the plant, we have been trying to confirm the reason why, and in that context, this could be one source. We're testing samples of water from the pit and from the sea near the plant, and we can't really say for certain until we've studied the results," he said. Hopefully, they'll get a straight story about the extend of the radiation! Will this be the end of nuclear power in Japan? Many purchased pols and many in the purchased media are still employing the nuclear industry's historically dishonest slogan calling nuclear power "safe, clean and efficient". exmas 45 minutes ago (7:19 AM) 24 Fans A catastrophic meltdown is hopefully not likely at this point. The leaking is indeed very serious and complicates the cleanup. Further releases and fire/explosions of course will be a very big problem, especially in the plutonium reactor. What is my biggest concern is, however, is that the evacuation zone of 12 kilometers (mile?) is wholly inadequate, and they are even encouraging people to stay or sneak back inside the zone by saying you should remain indoors in the zone. At present in the zone the background radiation level of exposure is, as I understand it (an I can be wrong of course) is high enough to be possibly life threatening after some 6 days of exposure. Further releases, which are going to happen, places people between 12 and say 25 miles at the least at serious risk. That is criminal! exmas: A catastrophic meltdown is hopefully not likely at this point. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/social/exmas/japan-nuclear-plant-radioactive-water-leak-sea_n_843932_82932034.html Permalink | Share it General Armchair 18 minutes ago (7:46 AM) 77 Fans They are ALL plutonium reactors. Every light water reactor both produces plutonium, and also "burns" it.
Regular uranium fuel rods are 96 percent non-fissile U-238 and 4 percent fissile U-235.
MOX fuel rods (7 percent of the fuel rods in Unit #3 are MOX, 93 percent are regular uranium rods) are anywhere from 4 to 10 percent fissile Plutonium-239, and the rest non-fissile U-238.
At the end of their useful life, regular uranium rods contain about 0.9 percent Pu-239. So a full reactor load of used up (spent) fuel is 0.9 percent plutonium
Reactor #3, if it was loaded with completely fresh fuel, 7 percent of which was MOX, would contain about 0.5 percent Pu-239.
The upshot? ALL the reactors are Plutonium time bombs. Reactor #3 probably has more plutonium than the others, but the amounts are pretty comparable, certainly well within the same order of magnitude.
EVERY commercial power reactor operating in the United States today has reactor cores and spent fuel pools loaded with rods that contain close to 1 percent Plutonium. Voice of America identifies the "pit" as a "maintenance pit on the edge of the Fukushima nuclear site."
Hmmm, I do know that "pits, ponds, and lagoons" are where liquid radioactive wastes are sometimes stored at nuke sites. Is this leak possibly NOT a result of the ongoing reactor meltdowns but rather some old radioactive waste that's been lying around?
